Join the Wellfleet Historical Society, the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, and Native Wampanoag/Nipmuc Marcus Hendricks on a walk exploring the First People of Wellfleet and the Herring River Overlook. This beautiful 18.3 acre uplands property is a typical coastal heath maintained by the Wellfleet Conservation Trust that is succeeding to a pine-oak woodlands. It hosts about a 1 mile walking trail loop which starts and ends at the parking area. In the northwestern stretches, the ridge offers spectacular views of the Herring River, Griffin and Great Islands and into the Cape Cod Bay.
We will celebrate the bounty of natural resources from the waterways and woodlands. Marcus will discuss how the First People lived within this marsh, bay and tidal flats, throughout the four seasons and developed sustainable methods of shell fishing, fishing, hunting, gathering, agriculture and cultural practices for thousands of years. We will discuss the important cultural knowledge from an Indigenous Peoples perspective.
